Dave Steel has announced it will close its Asheville operations. One of the few remaining manufacturing facilities in Asheville, Dave Steel has concluded it no longer fits in with the River Arts District. The District has received a lot of government attention, as community members wish to follow the vision of Richard Florida, which says neighborhoods begin to rejuvenate when artists move in. Not only have artists received grants for brownfield recovery; Dave Steel was the first business I ever saw receive corporate welfare. In 2004, it accepted what at the time seemed large, $3577 from the City of Asheville taxpayers, to help it create twenty-five new jobs.
