Just got an email from Alex Myrick and crew — Table is dead. At two years old. The restaurant that was supposed to be a Ballantyne staple for years is no more. It will be beyond interesting to see what, if anything, can fill the 6,500-square-foot space that cost Myrick over one million dollars to put together.

Earlier this year there were warning signs that the high-dollar demo that developers and retailers banked on was not particularly strong. More specifically, there was a lot of competition for the same South Charlotte dollar, dollars that might not be flowing so freely given the recent pull back in the financial sector that employs so many in the area.

I never actually got around to going to Table, which is sort of telling. I had enjoyed Blue, but had heard that Table was pricey for what you received — especially compared to SoMeck competitors like Sante or Mickie & Mooch’s. Ultimately, that market competition seemed to be the weakest part of the Table plan — it had to be the nite-out dining choice for the Southern burbs — no one was driving in from Cornelius like they might to Uptown — and Table was not.

Then there were the attempts at “upscale” nite life, which seemed more desperate than refined. It all adds up to another example of the limits of trying to sell something to the public that might not be in great demand.
