hhNow comes Stanford Financial Group, the latest Ponzi scheme to come crashing to Earth. Just so happens that Stanford, which has an office near South Park, was a big giver on the Charlotte arts scene in recent years.

In April 2008 Stanford announced gifts totaling $45K to Festival in the Park, Wing Haven Sanctuary and Carolina Raptor Center — all usual Arts & Sciences Council favorites. But an even bigger number likely gave Stanford title sponsorship of Blumenthal’s Broadway Lights series.

I am waiting to see which of Charlotte’s best and brighest admit to being hoodwinked by Stanford and if either BofA or Wachovia had any wealth-management exposure to its offerings.

Update: The Inter-Webs have spit out an interesting connection between Stanford and the DEA. Given the allegations of money laundering for Mexican drug cartels, very interesting indeed.

Update II: I see the Erik Spanberg went the same route and pegs the value of the Stanford sponsorship of a the Blumenthal series at $120K. I figured $100K tops. Shows you what I know.
