Take new Elon poll with a grain of salt (Updated)

Poll gives Romney small lead in NC in presidential race – National – NewsObserver.com.

The link abov reports that the new Elon Universitynpoll gives Mitt Romney a four-point lead over President Obama in North Carolina. Problem: Unless Elon has changed its methodology, the poll surveys all adults. That’s a useless way to sample voter sentiment. A screen of registered or likely voters is considered the bare minimum among pros to gauge public opinion of an election campaign.

If Elon has used a screen for voters, we may be getting somewhere.

UPDATE: Catawba College political science prof Michael Bitzer says Elon has begun using a voter screen. Good for them.
