The effort to minimize the sleaziness of Jim Black continues. On Sunday he was characterized as someone who was just out to help the little guy so often overlooked by power brokers, and earlier as a “quiet titan” who was victimized by “a political system veering out of control.”

All of this reminds me of an old story they tell about Gov. Eugene Talmadge, Herman‘s dad. He was campaigning on a flatbed truck in Columbus, Ga., wearing his trademark red galluses, when a farmer in the crowd said, “But, Gene, they say you stole.” Not missing a beat, Talmadge responded, “Sure, I stole. But I did it for YOU!” and the crowd erupted in applause.
