Two weeks ago, George Leef advised readers of the Raleigh News &
Observer about the traits needed in the leader who will replace UNC President Molly Broad. Last week his commentary went
national at Campus Report Online. Meanwhile, Jon Sanders was
referenced in a wickedly funny online column by “BobLee Swagger.” Bob Lee (humorist Mel Lewis) had a good ole’ time
making fun of UNC-Chapel Hill liberals in his irreverent piece about
the controversy this spring over a Western Civilization program that
was considered for funding by the John William Pope Foundation. “Among
the supposedly evil “Pope People” is a young fellow named Jon “Beowolf”
Sanders who wields a satirical putdown like a Jedi light sabre.
He has been known to give the UNC faculty squirrels verbal wedgies but
only on days that end in “y”; flagrantly ignoring “the rule” that
namecalling is only allowed BY faculty loons and not AT them.” Read the piece here. Although BobLee is a Sanders fan, Franklin Times columnist
Kathy Harrelson isn’t. In a recent swipe at Sanders for his criticism
of NC Wesleyan College’s conspiracy-laden course, “9-11: The Road to
Tyranny,” Harrelson, a Wesleyan graduate, wrote that it’s an issue of
free speech and independent thought, and defended Professor Jane
Christensen and the college. Sanders never questioned Christensen’s
speech rights, but rather the rigor of the course and credibility of her sources.
