As part of our constant search to convince the Uptown cheerleaders and Chamber types that the tipping point for Charlotte is not far off, we present the latest Census Bureau data on state taxes. North Carolina is again squarely in the middle of the pack at 25th in per capita tax burden, $2147 or just a smidge below the US average of $2192.

But then look at some of NC’s neighbors in the Southeast, the places that Charlotte actually competes with for businesses. Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee are all clustered around the $1700 mark. Then recall that you have to factor in the fact that Char-Meck has by far the highest local tax burden in North Carolina and the danger should be obvious to anyone who wants Charlotte to have a bright future.

We are taxing outselves right out of the market.
