In the United States, educators want to eliminate competition in our public schools.

In the Philippines, students hear a much different message. From the Sun.Star newspaper,

CEBU City Mayor-on-leave Tomas Osme?a told teachers yesterday to teach students how to be more aggressive, to fight to win and stay ahead so they will be competitive in the world.

Osme?a said the current system tells students to be submissive, to be contented with being just second-best as long as he gives all in every endeavor, when winning means just being slightly ahead.

He spoke through phone patch during the Teachers? Day celebration at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino yesterday afternoon.

?So we have to be competitive, not submissive. (Nowadays,) we give too much focus in making our children understand that people should lead them,? he said.
