The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction released their state allotment information for the 2017-18 school year.  The spreadsheets they provide are chock-full of data.

Teacher compensation breaks down like this:

$47,034 – salary (based on the 6th pay period of the 2016-17 school year)

$3,598 – Social Security (7.65 percent of total salaries)

$8,057 – retirement contribution (17.13 percent of total salaries)

$5,869 – health insurance (per position per year)

$64,558 – total

Often, debates about teacher compensation revolve around average salaries but not benefits.  Indeed, teachers will receive at least $17,524 in benefits this year, a figure that has increased significantly under the leadership of the Republican-led General Assembly.
