The News & Observer has the scoop:

The study, presented to the board [UNC system Board of Governors] Thursday, showed that teachers who graduated from the state’s public universities were in the middle of the pack in terms of effectiveness, while teachers who are in the Teach for America program excel in high school classrooms and in teaching middle school math. Students in Teach for America teachers’ middle school math classes get the equivalent of about 90 extra days of learning.

It is interesting how certification standards and NC DPI are never mentioned in the article. After all, teacher training programs must adhere to the medieval regulations and requirements established by the NC Department of Public Instruction.

It says a lot that the Teach for America students, who typically do not meet state licensure requirements, outperform certified teachers. Well, it says a lot for those of us who are listening.
