The North Carolina Association of Educators released a report entitled “Every Child Deserves Our Best,” which is a set of recommendations on how to persuade our best teachers to teach at our worst schools. The “Every Child Deserves Our Best” conference featured Lieutenant Governor Beverly Perdue, the NCAE, and a group of National Board Certified teachers.

Most of the recommendations are typical eduspeak. But I was impressed by the number teachers that welcomed the idea of merit pay. Of course, it is a point that was absent from the report’s final recommendations. I believe that there is widespread support for merit pay among the state’s teachers, which is the only thing that could put the issue on the table.
