The Virginia Education Association (VEA), affiliate of the National Education Association (NEA), urged members to wear blue in support of Obama, as well as register their students to vote.

An email obtained by the Washington Times called upon VEA members to “register two voters or talk to two people who may be on the fence/or a McCain supporter and sway them to become a Obama supporter. … There are people out there not yet registered. You teach some of them.”

Frankly, I am not surprised. When my wife and I taught in the Virginia public school system, the VEA was a very aggressive (nutty) advocate for Democratic candidates. Even so, neither of us were ever asked to engage in these kinds of partisan activities.

Update: The United Federation of Teachers in New York is distributing Obama campaign buttons to its members. One union member said that it shows students “the democratic process in action.”
