I had no idea until I read this, even having lived through both events as a 21-year-old very interested in current events, that Ted Kennedy’s Chappaquiddick incident occurred just two days before the Apollo 11 moon landing. No wonder the incident, in which Kennedy left Mary Jo Kopechne to drown while he talked over his political future with his family, didn’t have a bigger impact on the American public. It got overshadowed by arguably the biggest event of the millennium.

UPDATE: Scott Johnson has more:

Whether Kennedy genuinely repents leaving Mary Jo to die while he ran off in search of an alibi, we can only leave to a higher authority.
