My new hero, for the weekend at least, is Rep. Ronnie Sutton, a Robeson Democrat. He stated his opposition to a death-penalty moratorium in the state legislature in the Fayetteville Observer, arguing that the real goal of the movement is to abolish capital punishment and that any necessary studies and reforms of the system can proceed without a moratorium.

A two-year moratorium will only lead to an extension of another two years and the next thing you know, you’re five, six, seven years out,” he said. “Ultimately, it would lead to the (abolition) of the death penalty.”

Sutton said if people wanted the abolition of the death penalty he would support it.

“But I want that to be the choice of the citizens,” he said, “not the choice of some do-gooder outfit that just wants to eliminate the death penalty.”

Insightful. Delightful.
