This week’s Rhino reports that Guilford County Commissioner Steve Arnold will indeed declare personal bankruptcy.

Whether or not Arnold resigns is still up in the air. He at least has support from one other commissioner, which may or may not be a good thing:

Commissioner Skip Alston, on the opposite side of the political spectrum from the ultra-conservative Arnold, said he doesn’t think Arnold should resign.

“Why should he resign?” Alston said. “All of us have personal problems and business problems.”

Alston said Arnold’s troubles and all of the media attention haven’t seemed to impair Arnold’s abilities to deliberate rationally on county matters.

Alston also said elected officials are human beings who face personal problems including divorces, bankruptcies and all sorts of other occurrences that affect everyone.

“That could be me,” Alston said of Arnold’s financial downfall.

He said that, though he and Arnold are political rivals, Arnold is “a long-time colleague” that he respects.
