Let’s be honest here: The Atlantic Coast Conference is not doing too well in football. And the basketball prognosis isn’t all that favorable either. In football, exactly one ACC team is currently in the top 25: Virginia Tech at 16 or 17, depending upon the poll. Having so few teams in the top 25 is hard to achieve, given that there are 12 teams in the ACC and only 120 FBS teams.
ACC basketball, meanwhile, has been the UNC and Dook show for the past few years with no other teams making much of a consistent impression. That looks to be the case again this year, with Dook ranked one and Carolina at eight or nine in the preseason polls. The only other ranked ACC team at moment is Virginia Tech somewhere in the low 20s, depending upon the poll. (In case you where wondering, VT only plays Duke and UNC once each this year.)
Bonus observation: It could be worse. The Big East has no teams in the football top 25. Which makes for a pretty unappealing Random Automotive Product Bowl here in Charlotte next month, featuring the fourth pick from the ACC and the second pick from the Big East.
