The danger of equating ?conservative? with ?Republican?

I might end up reading The Death of Conservatism, the new volume from Whittaker Chambers biographer Sam Tanenhaus.

But Tanenhaus raises some red flags in a Newsweek interview by following the phrase ?mature, responsible conservatism? with a reference to Teddy Roosevelt.

The first President Roosevelt certainly was a Republican, but he was more ?progressive? than conservative, as his break with the GOP for the 1912 presidential election confirmed.
