According to USA Today/CNN/Gallup polling, the Kerry/Edwards ticket lost a net 5 percentage points against Bush/Cheney after the Democrat convention. Now, granted, this is within the poll’s margin for error, and other polls found a slight bounce in favor of Kerry/Edwards. Nevertheless, the same polling outfit July 12 found that the Kerry ticket experienced a “negative bounce” in North Carolina immediately after naming John Edwards as his running mate (the link takes you to John Hood’s blog on the particulars of the poll, which show how that poll’s not as dramatic as it sounded, but still, it’s interesting).
