The Friends of Durham political-action committee copped out last night by not making an endorsement of any of the three district attorney candidates. I thought this was the “conservative” PAC in Durham. You know, the kind of people who can make tough decisions in the lives and in their businesses. But not it their poltiics, it seems. This is as divisive a political race since the Mike Peterson-Nick Tennyson mayor’s race and these guys couldn’t make an endorsement? What’s a PAC for if it isn’t to make these kinds of choices. Here’s what Friends chairman David Smith had to say:

“I think it’s … that we’re as conflicted as the public in general is, that we have a lot of strong feelings lots of different ways and we didn’t feel comfortable making a selection of the three of them,” Smith said in an interview.

The left-wing People’s Alliance had no trouble with their endorsement. They went with Mike Nifong. What a surprise.
