That’s the title of a book written several years ago by Amity Schlaes. What she had in mind was the greedy hand of taxing authorities. It seems especially appropriate in view of a new approach to taxation that has been adopted in New Hampshire. (“Live Free or Die?” Give me a break.) Read about it here. Property owners are getting hit with extra tax burdens to the extent that they enjoy scenic vistas. A great view of the mountains could add a quarter million to the assessed value of your property.

This is perfectly subjective, enabling taxing authorities to soak people without limitation in order to feed the maw of the state.

Oops — I hope I haven’t just planted the seed of a nasty idea here.
