Bill Anderson writes in his Freeman column today about a case in Britain, where a man who grew to weigh 890 pounds wants to sue the National Health Service for allowing that to happen. There is a perverse logic to it: if the government claims the right and power to provide for our health, shouldn’t it be held responsible if it fails to do so? If the government is going to take some choices away from you, shouldn’t it be responsible if you mess up your life with the small bits of liberty that are still permitted? Can the government afford to allow people freedom to decide what and how much to eat when health care costs are a collective concern?
