You’ll have to go a long way to find a more overwrought bit of lefty writing than Hal Crowther’s piece from Cuba in The Independent Weekly.
Wandering like a tourist in a Marxist theme park, Crowther waxes
nostalgic for the equality and collective spirit he finds (which, of
course, don’t exist in the U.S.). It was Nixon who made Castro a
communist, you see, and Jesse Helms who kept him from, what,
moderating? He seems especially nonplussed by the Cubans’ love for
Americans and their eagerness for the coming day when Castro will be
gone and they will “drive Chevy trucks, they will eat and eat.” That sounds like a longing for capitalism to me.

But nothing in this piece is as illuminating as the way Crowther views the choice facing Cubans.

Would you rather have your children riding tourists for a living or smashing the homeless with baseball bats for recreation?

Cuban families, according to Crowther, face
seeing their daughters turn to prostitution under the noble Castro
regime or their sons turning into feral gang-teens in capitalist
Miami.
No in between. Not privation vs. prosperity. Just
prostitution vs. murder for fun. Sure, that’s the Hobson’s choice they
face, Hal. And lefties accuse conservatives of having no nuance!

Strangely, he never discusses the boatloads of people who almost daily risk their lives to leave that benighted island.
