With the sale of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune McClatchy has guaranteed the attention of its editors and reporters in the Carolinas. The economics of the newspaper biz demand that owners retrench and try to find a sustainable business model.
The good news for the status quo is that the network of McClatchy papers in the region is strong overall and in good, growing markets. The bad news is that there remains significant overlaps in coverage and responsibilities among the 7 papers.
However, these elements would seem to be dwarfed by the trend away from daily print papers as the local medium for getting advertising to eyeballs. Stay tuned.
