The A.J. Fletcher Foundation has received a lot of ink in the Raleigh News & Observer since the group’s president, Barbara Goodmon, signaled its transformation from a traditional charity to an advocacy organization on behalf of those she believes are under-served by government. In a front-page story, John Hood welcomed Goodmon to the arena. “It is better for the debate in Raleigh if there are more organizations rather than fewer engaged in the conversation,” he said. Late this week, N&O op-ed columnist Rick Martinez pointed out that, by his calculations, at least $24 billion per year in state and federal funds is spent on the North Carolina citizens Goodmon believes don’t get enough government assistance.
