I hate to complain about good-hearted people trying to make the world a better place, so I’ve struggled with this. At their regularly-scheduled meeting Tuesday, the Buncombe County Commissioners received a report from a group trying to help out in public housing. The spokeswoman said what differentiated their program from others is they ask people what they want, and then they bring it to them. They not only bring in food, they bring in fitness programs. They educate people, but they education them about services and how to navigate the system, so they can teach others the same. I’ve heard time and again that people in public housing are upstanding characters working multiple jobs while furthering their education; yet something in the gut says there’s some form of – I forgot the word used to describe it when workers with a low standard of living support a higher standard of living for non-workers – going on.
