Attention all members of the Charlotte city council who voted to spend another $2.5. million on a “basement” for the $155 million NASCAR Hall of Fame and pursue the idea of “sponsorships” for exhibits at the Hall —
Bwa-ha ha ha!
You really do not have a clue, do you? NASCAR is gonna bleed the city dry and their is nothing you can do about — not given the agreement you signed to land the Hall.
NASCAR wants you to spend waaay more than $13 million on exhibits on the Hall and there you cannot say no. And do not dream about finding sponsors for a static NASCAR annex to the the Convention Center. Where’s the value-add in that?
NASCAR is having trouble finding a replacement sponsor for the entire Busch series of racing — which gets insane amounts of publicity nationally and even internationally to some extent.
Sure, local deep pocket sponsors might step in to fill the void — hint hint — but you can forget about any big national names jumping at the chance to spend money on the Charlotte Convention Center.
Take a look at the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s sponsors — AirTran and Topps. Bet there is big money there. And that is for the Pro Football Hall, much more established, well-known, and tied into the wildly popular NFL.
Oh, and don’t even think of going to the auto manufacturers for funding. NASCAR fans would invent all kinds of reasons why one exhibit was bogus and another a crime once nameplates get involved. Can’t wait to see how this turns out.
