Coming right at you.

No surprise that the state Democratic Party Council of Review threw out the results of the December 6 county vote that selected Nick Mackey to be Mecklenburg County sheriff. Moreover, the 10-2 vote is convincing enough to give the Mecklenburg County Commission all the cover it needs to go ahead and name Chipp Bailey the next sheriff.

But first.

First assume that Mackey files suit on Monday, presumably against the county and the state party. After that, I have no idea what happens. This thing has spun so wildly out of control that closure seems a long way off.

We do know, however, that county Democratic chair David Erdman is flat out of his mind. To say that he eased party organizing rules in hopes of helping Beverly Earle best Pat McCrory may be the single craziest thing ever said in the Government Center. Earle had no hope of winning — not lugging Jim Black around her neck and along with assorted Raleigh scandals. Everyone knew Earle was pushed into the mayor’s race basically against her will, a few days into her campaign in July and it was clear Earle’s heart was not into the effort.

Yet Erdman says if he erred, he erred to help Earle. Fantasy. Sounds like Erdman resolved to argue that if a black sheriff’s candidate was ultimately harmed by Erdman’s actions, those actions were intended to help a black mayoral candidate. Yeah, that’s it. What a mess.
