This LA Times story about the teen pregnancy rate in the U.S. focuses on issues of birth control, which misses the key point. We have spent millions on publicly funded sex education efforts in this country, emanating from all levels of government, given to kids and teenagers in a variety of venues, including the classroom. I’m waiting for this country to be willing to admit that having children out of wedlock and at an alarmingly young age isn’t a result of lack of information. It is a result of parents, grandparents, and teachers who are unwilling to counsel and teach kids and teens about values, self-respect, expectations about their behavior, consequences, and yes, even judgment about what is morally right and what is morally wrong. Yes, I know, there are some who shudder at the mere thought of judging behavior as right and wrong. You see the results of that progressive thought in our decaying society. It’s time to admit the root cause of our problem.
