Here is an excellent column by Sheldon Richman on the issue of the year. Why does health care cost so much? In large part because the federal government has enacted a bunch of laws that create incentives that drive up costs, especially insurance for everything from heart surgery to dental checkups.

As for the proposed “reform” legislation, among the many objections to it is that it bureaucratizes health care. The problem with that is that bureaucracies have to follow inflexible laws and regulations, thus depriving the system of flexibility and the crucial discovery process of freedom.
