It’s not a prospect to relish, argues Jonah Goldberg in this razor-sharp piece in the Christian Science Monitor.

Goldberg surveys our “progressive” era with a special focus on Woodrow Wilson. The hallmark of that era wasn’t so much progress as authoritarianism. He quotes one progressive who wrote, “Laissez-faire is dead. Long live social control.” The key idea was that high-minded intellects (such as Wilson) should improve society by substituting an array of governmental mandates and prohibitions for the antiquated notion of individual liberty. The results were pretty ugly.

Hillary Clinton likes to call herself a “progressive.” That term is just as misleading as “liberal” is. What Hillary really should be called is an authoritarian. (Obama is hardly any different philosophically, but is much better at concealing the fist of coercion with a velvet glove.)
