California teacher Larry Sand writes here about one of the rights that unions never mention to those they represent — that they have legal rights not to be members.
Sand does not mention that even in non-Right to Work states, workers in unions are entitled to decline membership and pay only for activities that relate to contract negotiation and similar matters — not for politics, which is usually the largest expenditure of all. That’s the holding in the 1987 Beck case.
