With a tie vote, Guilford County commissioners denied support for the upcoming U.S. Figure Skating Championships at the Greensboro Coliseum. Commissioners Skip Alston, Bruce Davis, Carolyn Coleman, John Parks and Kirk Perkins voted in favor of the motion, which would have provided free EMS service valued at $40,000.
Championship director Hill Carrow emphasized “that the show would go on with or without support from the county.” I think that says it all, and should be a lesson when other ‘drivers of economic development’ come asking for incentives.
