Residents in Southern Buncombe County are understandably upset that the City of Asheville is planning to annex them. But they have extra ammunition thanks to a city analysis clearly showing that the annexed communities will pay more in taxes than they will receive in the form of city services.

There?s no surprise here. That?s why cities annex ? to score net new tax dollars. What?s surprising is only that the city?s budgetary math has been so clearly communicated ahead of time. According to the Citizen Times:

“We already have all of the benefits they’re offering,” said Carolyn Baity, who owns Baity’s Precision Machining on Glen Bridge Road with her husband, Bill. “It would not be any additional benefit for us, just extra taxes.”

Welcome to city living.
