Under decades of rule by Democrats who profess themselves concerned about protecting civil rights and privacy and Republicans who profess themselves concerned about keeping government limited, we find that the federal leviathan increasingly spies on us, issues mandates we must follow, prohibits peaceful conduct people might want to engage in, confiscates property on flimsy excuses, sends SWAT teams to raid people’s homes, always terrorizing and sometimes killing, and on and on. Winston Smith could hardly tell the difference.
