Those concerned with narrowing the achievement gap between black and white students in Chapel Hill have put all their eggs in the “it takes a village” basket. Problem is, the village doesn’t seem to want to participate in the effort to close the gap.

A news story in The Chapel Hill Herald writes that a group called Minority Student Achievement Network thinks the key to the effort is “community members.” If it weren’t for these lazy and apathetic “community members,” the group seems to say, then the achievement-gap problem could be solved.

“I am just damn frustrated with where we are with students of color,” Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board Vice Chairwoman Elizabeth Carter is quoted as saying. “We just need to ratchet up and start holding people accountable.”

A suggestion: Why not begin holding the students and their parents accountable and quit trying to foist it all off on “community members” who have no obligation to take up the slack for lazy students and irresponsible parents?
