I think it’s hilarious that, two days after reading an article bemoaning Clemmonsville’s rapid development comes another article on the grand opening of — you guessed it — the new Wal-Mart:

Consumers like LaTonya Quinney and her husband, Kevin, have been waiting for the opening of the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 1330 W. Clemmonsville Road off Peters Creek Parkway.

As soon as a bus picked up their son, Micah, yesterday for school, the couple headed for the store’s 8 a.m. opening.

“We’re loving it,” Quinney said….The 203,804-square-foot store employs about 400 people, the majority of which work full time. The store is Wal-Mart’s newest prototype, offering a customer-oriented layout with wider aisles and new signs that are designed to help customers see where they want to go throughout the store. The store was built with an environmentally friendly design with skylights and energy-efficient lighting.

Powell said that the outside of the building was designed specifically for the local area, including the display of art in the parking lot, the use of a lot of brick and decorative windows.

I get the feeling that somewhere an anti-sprawl advocate is banging his head against the wall.
