Almost everyone agrees that American public education is in crisis. Even liberals think so, but claim its because of racism, sexism and all other kinds of isms. Conservatives say it’s because of feather-bedded teacher unions that won’t get rid of lazy and incompetent classroom instructors. So, what is the White House doing about it?:

The White House is set to announce on Monday a major new initiative that would place up to 5,000 salad bars in public schools nationwide, despite uncertainties over how local health inspectors might treat those salad bars and USDA nutrition-tracking rules that could prove a major impediment.

Officials in the White House, led by chef Sam Kass, and at the U.S. Centers for Disease and Prevention, have been working to build a coalition representing the produce industry and Ann Cooper, director of nutrition services in Boulder, Colo. schools, who recently teamed with Whole Foods to raise $1.4 million from customers to establish a grant program that would place salad bars in qualifying schools.

The nutrition argument is a red herring designed to take attention away from the biggest problem of American education: bad or no parenting. No amount of lettuce and tomatoes will make up for the reality of kids with irresponsible parents, or kids raised by grandparents because their parents long ago decided to let the village raise their children.
