Ok, so The Charlotte Observer thinks the city should raise taxes. Fair enough. But in its “The right reasons” editorial the paper totally swallows the fiction that the tax hike is needed to fund police and fire protection. That simply is not true, as Charlotte’s recent lavish spending indicates.

You can say a tax hike is needed to continue and increase spending on all current line items in the budget, high and low priority alike. Or you can say that non-essentials should be stripped from the budget first and then see where we stand.

We’ll see next week where the city council wants to go.
