We can praise Texas’ approach to business, medical malpractice reform, and the basic concept of liberty, but it’s too bad to read that the Lone Star State drops the ball — or maybe it’s a lug nut — when it comes to taxpayer subsidies for motor sports. (Where have heard of that problem before?)

The latest Bloomberg Businessweek details a plan to commit $250 million in taxpayer funds over the next decade to promote Formula 1 auto racing.

At least some Texans have exhibited sense on this issue:

“I’m not sure of the wisdom of using tax dollars to fund a racetrack,” says Ewa Siwak, 44, whose job teaching German at Bowie High School in Austin is being cut. State Senator Dan Patrick, a Houston Republican, is another critic: “I don’t understand why 25 people in Austin could not put up $1 million each if they thought this was a good opportunity, instead of the state making a $25 million commitment.”
