I enjoy reading the work of American Enterprise Institute scholar Christina Hoff Sommers. Her analysis of the plight of boys is a serious and thoughtful look at our culture. Now Sommers is being attacked by the Southern Poverty Law Center, as the Weekly Standard points out. The group writes that she “advocates for the subjugation of women.”
“I completely reject that,” Sommers said. “This is a group I used to admire. They once went after Klan members and Nazis and now… [they go after] people like Ben Carson and Ayaan Hirsi Ali. It’s absurd.” She adds that the SPLC has no evidence for the suggestion that she “gives mainstream and respectable face” to “male supremacy”:. “They’re blacklisting in place of engaging with arguments. They blacklist you, rather than try to refute you.”
I encourage you to read Sommers’ writings about boys in our culture. And I encourage you to reject the narrative of groups whose aim is to denigrate and blacklist those with whom they disagree. It’s shameful and anti-intellectual.
