And what would that be? Three guesses and the first two don’t count—that’s right—-we don’t need any money.

At the Guilford County Economic Development Alliance’s (GCEDA) Thursday, Jan. 25 meeting, the alliance did something nearly unheard of for ongoing entities funded by local governments: It announced that the organization is seeking no money this year from the three governments that fund it – Guilford County and the cities of Greensboro and High Point.

In an era where a ‘budget cut’ means you get more money, just not as much as you requested—I applaud the GCEDA and its respective economic developers for standing up and saying ‘“We have more than enough in the bank,’ as Greensboro Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Brent Christensen did. I often mock economic developers as pseudo-bureaucrats working behind the scenes only to see the status quo prevail year in and year out. But once in a while the time comes to give credit where credit is due, and this one of them.
