Columnist Jerry Sternberg appropriately complained about traffic calming. Citizens demanded it in the Kimberly subdivision in the name of children, and Sternberg correctly states that the funding for it was obtained through an extortion of $375,000 from the Grove Park Inn because the city fathers did not want them to build a new condominium complex. He further illuminates that government was working against its number-one responsibility of public safety by installing dangerous, 6″, sharp curbs which have caused hundreds of accidents. He estimates damages between $500,000 and $1,000,000, with many claims filed against the city. Then, there are the ugly signs and weeds.

I’ve always thought chuck holes, or ruts in unmaintained gravel roads would be cheaper.
