A letter writer today takes issue with Frank’s notion that freedom is being taken care of:
Thomas Frank, I like your effort to turn the tables (“The Left Should Reclaim ‘Freedom’,” Tilting Yard, Sept. 16). My daughter’s hamster has food, water, shelter, and even medical care, and a cage with fun little curly tubes. We are happy to provide these luxuries. The hamster responds by constantly trying to chew its way to freedom. I think we all instinctively understand what freedom is, and it is not a gilded cage.
