I wish that reporters would start asking all candidates for lists of departments to be eliminated, budgets to be slashed, and laws to be repealed. The default position in our political discourse is always that we need to have the government do more. We’d make an enormous improvement if we could turn that around, or at least get to the point where sometimes politicians would have to discuss the idea that we’re over-governed.
If we should ever get the opportunity to confront a candidate, we ought to ask for his top ten laws and programs to get rid of and then express astonishment when the individual can’t think of anything.
