This column by Thomas Sowell is not to be missed. In it, he dismantles the great leftist myth that government intervention starting with “The Great Society” programs of LBJ have done great things for the poor of the country. Sowell argues that black economic progress was rapid prior to the advent of the welfare state and has been derailed by all the “help” that politicians have given them since.

In a number of his books, Sowell makes the point that minority groups that did not look to politics for help have done much better than those that trusted in politicians.
