A sports writer for The Chronicle, Duke’s student newspaper, described a play during the Feb. 12 Duke-Virginia men’s basketball game with these words: “Luol Deng went up strong with his orangutan arms, like he always does.” Of course, this is absolutely indefensible not only for the obvious reasons, but also because any writer should know the response such a description would draw from hypersensitive campus activists. Of course, the predictable happened. Here’s the Chronicle’s apology “to Deng, the men’s basketball team, Duke fans, the African-American community and all of our readers.”
