The economy is so tough, government is getting tough on people trying to earn some money.

Columbus Town Council tabled consideration of an ordinance that would ban door-to-door for-profit sales. It would, however, allow non-profits, school groups, and politicians (not just political candidates) the privilege provided they register with the town and carry documentation.

The ordinance would also subject persons wishing to peddle items from roadside stands to more regulation. Prospective roadside merchants would, among other things, have to disclose criminal records to the town, procure a temporary sales permit at least one week in advance of setting up shop, and submit a site plan.

Council is expected to approve the ordinance August 18.
