Bill Krueger at “Under the Dome” is trying to figure out who fired Debbie Crane from her post at the Department of Health & Human Services. The issue took on new saliency after after Gov. Mike Easley gave a new answer to the question yesterday during an interview with several newspaper editors, including our own Richard Wagner.

I offered an explanation at the site:

“I know the governor’s latest story may seem confusing, but the truth isn’t hard to figure out if you examine the situation logically.

Mike Easley did not fire Crane.

Franklin Freeman, his chief of staff, did not fire Crane.

Dempsey Benton, his secretary of HHS, did not fire Crane.

So, actually, Debbie Crane was never fired. She and many others are under the mistaken impression that she is no longer an employee of HHS. As a matter of fact, she is. And Debbie should report to work tomorrow morning.

Though, after such a long and unauthorized absence, she might well get fired.”
