Father Ambassador Senator Special Counsel John Danforth walks a well-trodden side road :
“I think that the Republican Party fairly recently has been taken over by the Christian conservatives, by the Christian right … Nothing is more dangerous than religion in politics and government when it becomes divisive,” he said. “I’ll give you examples: Iraq. Northern Ireland. Palestine.”
Apparently he’s uncomfortable making divisive distinctions between groups like, say, Southern Baptists who openly talk about Jesus while serving meals to hurricane victims, as opposed to Islamo-fascists who openly talk about blowing themselves up for the opportunity to slaughter infidel civilians. Seems obvious enough to me, but maybe time in Washington gives one a different perspective.
