The News & Observer reports that Wake County manager David Cooke will soon present a budget that will eliminate some jobs — most of the positions are vacant anyway — and keep the property tax rate as its current level. But what’s very interesting is the comment from Commissioner Betty Lou Ward near the end of the story:

Though some commissioners said they are concerned about making cuts when the economic downturn is increasing the need for many county services, there also is recognition that the dire fiscal outlook offers little flexibility.

Commissioner Betty Lou Ward said Tuesday that a majority on the elected board would not support even a modest tax increase this year.

So which commissioners would support a tax increase? Time to name names.
